Ghana frustrates England with a goalless draw

Ghana produced their best performance of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, forcing England to goalless draw in an explosive Group L encounter at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night.

Despite England enjoying the majority of possession in both halves, the Black Stars’ defense remained composed and disciplined, denying the English forwards clear scoring opportunities.

England captain Harry Kane, who had leveled the country’s World Cup scoring record of 10 goals held by Gary Lineker after scoring against Croatia in their opening match, was closely marked throughout the encounter
Declan Rice was England’s live-wire in midfield and troubled Ghana with his darting runs. He came close to scoring from a free-kick after driving forward, but his effort was blocked.

A few minutes later, following the water break, England resumed their pressure but continued to find Ghana’s packed defense difficult to penetrate. Rice headed over from a Noni Madueke cross in the 37th minute as the first half ended goalless.

A win for either side would have secured an early place in the round of 32, but neither team could find the breakthrough.

England coach Thomas Tuchel made tactical changes to his starting line-up, bringing in Marc Guéhi and Djed Spence for John Stones and Nico O’Reilly, who had started against Croatia However, the changes did little to break down a determined Ghanaian side.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz also reshuffled his squad, with Thomas Partey returning to the side while goalkeeper Benjamin Asare started in place of the injured Lawrence Ati Zigi

The second half began in the same fashion, with England dominating possession while Ghana looked dangerous on the counterattack.
In the 50th minute, Marvin Senaya got behind the England defense after a long diagonal ball, but Spence intervened at the last moment to deny him a clear shot at goal.

England responded with a flurry of chances around the hour mark. Madueke’s shot was blocked before Anthony Gordon’s follow-up effort was saved by Asare.

As the match entered its final stages, England pushed relentlessly for a winner.

Substitute Bukayo Saka’s curling effort from outside the box was superbly saved by Asare before O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar. The rebound fell to Kane six yards from goal, but the Bayern Munich striker blazed his left-footed effort over the bar.

Kane later had a header blocked on the line, while Guéhi’s header from a corner was also cleared off the line as Ghana held firm to secure a valuable point.

England remains top of Group L with four points and a goal difference of plus two, while Ghana are second on the same number of points with a goal difference of plus one.
