Refilwe turns heartbreak into empowerment on new single

Trailblazing singer, songwriter, actress and model Refilwe Maitisa is embracing a new chapter in her musical journey with the release of her second single, titled Done. The song is a bold breakup anthem that transforms heartbreak into a celebration of freedom and self-worth.

Released on 12 June 2026 across all major streaming platforms, the ditty combines upbeat Afropop and Amapiano-inspired sounds with lyrics that reflect on walking away from a toxic relationship. Rather than dwelling on pain and loss, the track focuses on the strength that comes with choosing yourself and moving forward.

Written from a place of reflection, the song captures the relief and peace that can follow difficult endings, while its infectious melodies encourage listeners to dance through the healing process.

Refilwe said the song was inspired by the idea that endings can often lead to new beginnings.

“The song is called Done because it represents the end of something. I was inspired by the fact that the end of a bad relationship can be the beginning of something beautiful,” she said.

She explained that heartbreak extends beyond romantic relationships and can also stem from friendships or challenging life situations.

“I wanted to create a song that reassures people and gives them courage to move forward. Just because something hurts when it ends, it doesn’t mean that moving on was the wrong decision. You can let go, find peace and start again.”

The track was written and recorded in collaboration with producer Mojalefa “Mjakes” Thebe and marks a significant step in the artist’s creative evolution.

While her debut single, Home, incorporated elements of pop, R&B and Marabi music, Done explores a fresh sonic direction rooted in contemporary African sounds. The release highlights Refilwe’s versatility and willingness to experiment with different musical styles while remaining committed to authentic storytelling.

With South Africa commemorating Youth Month, Refilwe hopes the song’s message will resonate with young people navigating difficult circumstances.

She believes Done serves as a reminder that growth often comes after adversity and that letting go of what no longer serves you can create space for something better.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Refilwe has built an impressive career across multiple creative disciplines. She graduated top of her class from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, earned an associate degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, appeared in the award-winning musical Humanity’s Child, and recently walked the runway for acclaimed South African designer David Tlale.

Despite her achievements in theatre, fashion and academia, music remains one of her most personal and meaningful forms of expression. With Done, she continues to carve out her place in the South African music industry while encouraging listeners to find strength in new beginnings.
