Bafana Bafana endured a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat to host Mexico in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday night at Mexico City Stadium in front of 80,824 spectators.
To make matters worse, South Africa finished the match with nine men after both Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off.
Mexico dominated from the opening whistle, pinning Bafana Bafana deep inside their own half and controlling possession during the opening exchanges.
The hosts threatened as early as the fourth minute when Brian Gutiérrez delivered a dangerous free-kick into the box, but the South African defense managed to clear the danger. A minute later, Mexico came close again from a corner kick. Raul Jiménez connected with the delivery and fired a shot towards the bottom-left corner, but captain Ronwen Williams produced a brilliant diving save to keep the score level.
However, Williams could do little to prevent Mexico from taking the lead in the ninth minute. A costly mistake by the South African defense allowed Julián Quiñones to collect the ball on the edge of the box before calmly slotting it into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Mexico continued to dominate proceedings, with their attack causing constant problems for Bafana Bafana’s defense. Williams was forced into several important saves to prevent further damage, including stops from Israel Reyes in the 30th minute and efforts from Jesús Gallardo and Jiménez in the 35th and 42nd minutes respectively.
South Africa’s best opportunities of the first half came late on. In the 45th minute, Mbekezeli Mbokazi found space and unleashed a powerful effort towards the top-left corner, only for the Mexican goalkeeper to produce a fine save. Moments later, Aubrey Modiba broke forward with purpose but was dispossessed before he could test the goalkeeper.
Bafana Bafana’s situation worsened shortly after the restart when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card in the 49th minute following a reckless challenge, leaving referee Wilton Sampaio with little choice but to dismiss him.
Mexico took full advantage of their numerical superiority and doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where Jiménez rose highest to head the ball into the bottom-left corner and make it 2-0.
South Africa’s frustrations deepened in the 78th minute when substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off following a VAR review. Zwane, who had replaced Jayden Adams in the 61st minute, was adjudged to have struck a Mexican player in the face.
There was a late dismissal for Mexico as César Montes received a red card in stoppage time for foul play, but it provided little consolation for Hugo Broos’ side.
The defeat leaves Bafana Bafana with plenty of work to do in Group A. Their next fixture is against Czechia on 18 June before they conclude their group-stage campaign against South Korea on 24 June.
