How do you know when you have  found the one? A man who had only known his girlfriend for a month, knew he had found the one and immediately started with lobola negotiations

The bride’s family asked for 11 cows and the man, in his 30s, promised to deliver all the cattle on Sunday.

He didn’t have a single cow to his name, so like a man he had to make a plan. So he decided to steal them.

Within a week he’d managed to snatch 11 cows from four different families in Mkhwakhweni, Pongola in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police have managed to recover all stolen cows, the man is currently on the run.

Chairman of the local stock theft prevention organisation, Isikebhe, Wilson Mavimbela, said they came across the man walking with the cows on Sunday morning.

“We asked him for a permit for the cows and he couldn’t present one. Instead he said he was helping the animals cross the road. When he recognised me from Isikebhe he ran. We took the cows and kept them and then called the police,” said Mavimbela.

According to Mavimbela they later met two men who said they were the man’s brothers-in-law and were going to meet up with him.

They explained that the man was bringing the cows to their home to pay lobola for their sister.

“When the girlfriend came over she told us that she had been in a relationship with the man for a month. She said she didn’t know where he was originally from. When we investigated we found that he was from Vryheid,” Mavimbela said.

“We also found out that he was using three different surnames, Khumalo, Dlamini and Zungu.

The girlfriend knew him as Khumalo.”

Mbuzeni Nxumalo, whose cow was among those recovered, said his cow was stolen on Thursday afternoon.

“If I ever catch a person stealing my cows I think I would kill him because they sustain my family and I also sell them to take my kids to school,” he said.

Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo has appealed to the community to assist with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts.

“The 11 cows were seized by police and will be impounded until the lawful owner has been located,”  Ngcobo said.

Those with information on the suspect are requested to contact Captain Ntshayintshayi on 082 557 7670, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report anonymously via the MySAPS app.
