On Tuesday Morning, thousands of fans from around the country graced OR Tambo International airport to welcome Banyana Banyana back into the country after outstanding performance at the WAFCON championhionship.

A 2-1 victory over Morocco sealed the deal for Banyana Banyana at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Morocco, on Saturday evening.

During the Banyana Banyana homecoming, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, said that equal pay for international players will be passed as a law.

Mthethwa further confirmed this will not be only exclusive to football. This comes after continued cries over the pay disparity between men and women in sport.

Jordaan also confirmed that the football body will follow a trend occurring throughout the women’s game.

“On the African continent, Sierra Leone became the first African country to pay women and men the same, after an agreement between the government and the Sierra Leone football [association]. Brazil now is paying men and women equal. Norway has followed that route, England has gone that route and it’s time South Africa follows that route,” Jordaan said.

Mthethwa also handed over a 5.8 million cheque to the Banyana squad in addition to the R9.2 million bonus for lifting the African Cup of Nations.
