Former Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United winger Daine Klate has revealed what his former coach Gavin Hunt told him before he accepted the job offer at Chippa United.

Klate is one of the most decorated players in Premier Soccer League (PSL) history and ventured into coaching after hanging up his boots in 2019.

When Hunt joined the Chilliboys last year, he brought his former player in to be the reserve team coach, with Klate receiving high laurels for his first season with the Diski Challenge side after finishing inside the top eight and qualifying for DStv Diski Shield Cup.

After an impressive quarter-final win against the TS Galaxy’s Diski team, Klate was asked to take charge of the senior side of Chippa United, while Kurt Lenjties was placed on special leave.

Hunt, who has recently been appointed as SuperSport United coach, advised the former Pirates winger to take the job, with Klate revealing parts of their phone call on Sunday.

“When I spoke to Gavin, the first words was ‘Go for it boy! It’s only part of learning. You are new into coaching. So obviously the sooner you start the better’,” he told Thabiso Mosia on SAFMSportON.

“Because I’m still young when it comes to coaching but I think it’s a good step in my career because I feel at home. I’m born and bred over here and the sentimental value part played an important role in that.

“Coach Hunt did bring me over to Chippa to be the Diski [Challenge] coach and that’s the progression from Diski to the first team.”
