At-home waxing mistakes to avoid

At-home waxing can be a convenient and cost-effective way to remove unwanted hair, but getting smooth results takes more than simply heating the wax and pulling.

From using wax that is too hot to waxing already-irritated skin, a few common mistakes can leave you with redness, burns, ingrown hairs or skin irritation.

Here’s how to make your next DIY waxing session safer and more effective.

Waxing skin that’s sunburnt or irritated

As reported by The Citizen, one of the biggest at-home waxing mistakes is waxing skin that is already compromised. Avoid waxing sunburnt, very sensitive, inflamed or damaged skin, as removing the wax can further irritate the area.

This is particularly important in sunny weather, where regular sun exposure can leave skin more sensitive than you realise. If your skin is sore or peeling, wait until it has fully recovered before waxing.

Using wax that’s too hot

Hot wax can cause burns if it is overheated. Always follow the product’s heating instructions.

Healthline recommends testing the temperature by applying a small patch to your outer wrist to gauge if the heated wax is too hot to proceed. It should be hot but tolerable.

Ignoring your skincare routine

Retinol and prescription retinoids can make skin more vulnerable to being lifted or torn during waxing. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids for two to five days before waxing the face.

If you are taking isotretinoin, waxing should be avoided during treatment and for six months afterwards because of the risk of skin injury and scarring.

Waxing without proper preparation

Hair that is too short can make waxing ineffective, while excessively long hair can make the process messier and more painful. Dermatologists recommend hair roughly 6–19 mm long before waxing.

Finally, don’t rush. Follow the product instructions carefully, work in manageable sections and give freshly waxed skin time to settle. If you experience significant blistering, severe pain or signs of infection, seek medical advice.
