Former Orlando Pirates defender Thulani Hlatshwayo has explained why he opted to join Supersport United after leaving the Buccaneers.

The 32-year-old was released by the Buccaneers last month after struggling to live up to expectations during his two season at Orlando Stadium.

However, Hlatshwayo now secured himself a move to SSU, signing a one-year deal which includes an option to extend it by another year.

“SuperSport United is a team that is known to win trophies and I hope I can share my experience which means I have to equally work hard,” he told his new club.

“There is competition in the team which is good for the energy around the players as well as keeping the togetherness and I will make sure I earn my right to play.”

Hlatshwayo worked with Hunt at Bidvest Wits between 2014 and 2020, winning the league title as well as the Telkom-Knockout trophy, saying he’s looking forward to reunite with his former coach.

“I feel good to reunite with coach Gavin. I know what kind of a personality he is and for me to revive myself and I think SuperSport was the best teams to table for me,” he added.

“Obviously, we know one another. We’ve won trophies before at Wits.

“I know what kind of character he is – he wants more, he wants everything, he wants character.

“And I’m aware also with the youngsters in SuperSport, being a development team, and hoping that everything that I have learnt with Gavin, I’ll be able to share with the guys.

“And be able to tell them what kind of a person he is and be able to share my experience with them, and be a role model to the youngsters.”

Hlatshwayo has made 180 appearances under Hunt, as per Transfermarkt, scoring 20 goals and lifting two trophies together.
