  • The programme returns dignity to those sidelined by preventable blindness through life-changing surgery.
  • More than 10,000 cataract operations have been performed since the start of the current financial year.
  • The initiative specifically helps the elderly regain the ability to navigate daily life without constant assistance.

The Gauteng Department of Health is transforming lives by returning independence to thousands through its cataract surgery programme. For many residents, particularly the elderly, the “gift of sight” means moving from a world of shadows back into a life of dignity.

By restoring vision, the initiative allows patients to once again enjoy simple freedoms reading, walking unassisted, and seeing the faces of their loved ones.

This effort focuses on more than just medical outcomes; it is about social reintegration. Since the start of the financial year, the province has successfully completed over 10,000 procedures, drastically reducing the burden on families and helping seniors reclaim their place in the community.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens, often likened to looking through a frosted window. The surgery is a highly effective, routine procedure where the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear artificial one, often taking less than 30 minute.

Public health systems in South Africa have long faced extensive waiting lists for elective surgeries.

By hitting the 10,000-mark so early in the cycle, Gauteng is demonstrating a successful model of “surgical marathons” intensive periods where theatre time is dedicated solely to clearing these specific backlogs.

Restoring sight has a massive “multiplier effect” on society. When an elderly family member regains their vision, it often frees up a younger relative from full-time caregiving duties, allowing them to return to school or the workforce, thereby improving the household’s overall economic stability.
