Relebohile Mofokeng eyes milestone in possible final Soweto Derby

Relebohile Mofokeng could be set for what may be his final Soweto Derby appearance this Sunday afternoon, as speculation around a move to Europe continues to grow.

The 21-year-old attacker has already featured in five derbies against Kaizer Chiefs, registering one goal and three assists.

While his performances against Amakhosi have been mixed, he made a notable impact in the most recent encounter.

Although he did not get on the scoresheet in February’s 3-0 victory, Mofokeng played a key role in the build-up to the second goal, assisting Oswin Appollis in a dominant display by Orlando Pirates.

He also boasts a decisive moment in this fixture, having scored the winning goal when the two sides met in a league clash in May last year.

Rele Mofokeng looking for derby goal

Nicknamed “President yama 2K,” Mofokeng heads into Sunday’s clash in fine form. The Bafana Bafana playmaker has netted 10 league goals and provided seven assists this season, underlining his growing influence.

He is now on the brink of a significant milestone, just two goal contributions away from reaching 19 for the season. Achieving that mark would place him among an elite group of PSL performers.

Notable names to have reached that benchmark include teammate Deon Hotto (2018–19), Bradley Grobler (2019–20), and Monnapule Saleng (2022–23).

Since breaking into the Orlando Pirates first team in 2022, Mofokeng has scored 29 goals in 112 appearances, cementing his status as one of the league’s brightest talents.

With his stock continuing to rise, he is currently among the leading contenders for the PSL Footballer of the Year award and Sunday’s derby could provide the perfect stage to strengthen his case.

Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday in the second Soweto Derby of the season at the FNB Stadium.
