Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has backed Lehlohonolo Majoro’s Major Elite Soccer Strikers Academy (MESSA).
The academy, launched by Majoro, who played for both Amakhosi and Orlando Pirates, aims to provide specialised training for forwards and address the lack of technical skills among strikers in the country.
“I support what Lehlohonolo Majoro is doing and a lot of top strikers like your Collins Mbesuma – these guys need to come out of retirement and maybe bang those goals and show the current generation how it’s done,” said Khune as per KickOff.
The former Bafana Bafana keeper highlighted the fact that teams needed to invest in striker coaches to improve the league and also help strikers score regularly.
Khune wants players to learn from Majoro
“Good chances were created, but it’s been a cry for us as a nation,” Khune added.
“Even in our league, the Betway Premier League, we are not converting. You can see right now we have eight [league] games to go. Our top score is 12 goals. So teams need to really invest in striker coaches.”
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala is one of the few players who have already enrolled in Majoro’s academy. The 21-year-old attacker was seen last month working on his finishing while the ex-Chiefs star was handing out instructions.
Khune and Majoro played together at Kaizer Chiefs, winning several trophies before the latter joined rivals Orlando Pirates in 2014. The duo also featured at Bafana Bafana during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, where South Africa reached the quarter-finals.
