Orlando Pirates open contract talks with fan-favourite amid uncertain future

Orlando Pirates have reportedly begun discussions with Thabiso Lebitso over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) star joined the Buccaneers in January 2024 from Chippa United and quickly made an impression.

Lebitso became a fan favourite after scoring a stunning goal against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in March 2024.

Despite his promising start, injuries have disrupted his progress, while competition for places has intensified with the presence of Deano van Rooyen, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Bandile Shandu.

Orlando Pirates talented star set for new contract?

This season, the right-back has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including the MTN8, Carling Knockout and CAF Champions League.

According to KickOff, Lebitso has entered the final months of his contract, making him eligible to negotiate with other clubs if a new deal is not finalised.

However, the same report indicates that Orlando Pirates still view the defender as part of their long-term plans and have already initiated talks to extend his contract.

The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as both the club and the player assess whether an agreement can be reached. Pirates are understood to be eager to secure Lebitso’s future before he becomes available on a free transfer.

With Shandu expected to depart, Lebitso’s stay could mean his competition will only be Sebelebele and Van Rooyen, with the latter playing some games as a right-wing.

Do you think Lebitso should extend his stay at Pirates?
