Lungelo Nthenga (24), a KZN taxi driver who was transporting looters during the 2021 July civil unrest, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Nthenga has pleaded guilty to three counts of theft at the Durban Regional Court.

News24 reports that Nthenga’s vehicle was loaded with goods such as tinned fish, rice and many other items that were looted from the surrounding warehouses.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson said that, Nthenga used his vehicle to transport people to the Mobeni business industrial area, on South Coast Road, so they could loot.

“He was arrested when his vehicle was stopped at a roadblock during a stop and search operation conducted by the police in order to deter looting conduct”
