‘Calls for me to enter Commonwealth Games’

Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille has responded to comments on a video she shared swimming in the potholes in Johannesburg, via a Facebook post on Tuesday, 31 March.

HELEN ZILLE: ‘I’LL BE TRAINING RIGHT HERE IN JOHANNESBURG’

Zille jokingly responded to fans and followers calls for her to enter this year’s Commonwealth Games, after she shared a video of herself swimming in the potholes in Johannesburg.

In the video, Zille is seen swimming, with snorkeling gear in one of Johannesburg’s potholes as she highlighted the issue of a burst pipe that she claimed was fixed and burst again, which caused so much of water to flow that she could swim.

Taking to Facebook, Zille teased that her team is thinking about the calls for her to enter the Commonwealth Games and how she would practice right there in Johannesburg.

She expressed that new pools, a metaphor for potholes, have been opening up in Johannesburg every week.

Take a look …

“Good morning, Joburgers . I’ve seen the calls for me to enter the Commonwealth Games this year. My team and I will certainly give it some thought,” she wrote.

“In the meantime, I’ll be training right here in Johannesburg, with all the new pools opening up across the city every week 🏊‍♀️,” she continued.

MAYORAL CANDIDATE FOR JOHANNESBURG

Helen Zille is the DA mayoral candidate for Johannesburg for the 2026 municipal elections.

The politican was officially named the mayoral candidate in September 2025.

Her aim is reportedly to restore the city to its former glory by tackling service delivery failures and unstable coalitions.
