MM Platinum Are ABC Champions!

MM Platinum (La Masia) are the 2021/2022 national ABC Motsepe champions after beating Magesi FC 1-0 in the national playoffs final at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams had already confirmed their promotions to the GladAfrica Championship after reaching the final, beating out the other seven regional champions to the two spots.

Perhaps with their places in professional football already booked, it was understandable that the first half lacked the intensity of previous games at the playoffs, and while there were a few half-chances, it remained goalless after 45 minutes.

MM Platinum thought they had a penalty in the 57th minute after Joshua Sauls was brought down in the box, but the referee wasn’t interested.

And finally the deadlock was broken in the 74th minute, Sipho Mahlangu racing onto a good over-the-top pass from Sheldon Van Wyk, before chipping over Tebogo Semenya, the Magesi goalkeeper.

Despite a few late attempts from Magesi to get back into the game, goalkeeper Sidingo Nxumalo was on hand to deny the Limpopo outfit.

Magesi were reduced to ten men in the 87th minute when Junior Lethwaba received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card, and MM Platinum were the able to manage the game and hold onto victory.

The Gauteng champions, coached by Dalano Hendricks and Ashraf Hendricks, did not concede a goal in any of their four games at the week-long playoffs.

MM Platinum receive R1 million in prize money, while Magesi as the runners-up get R600 000.
