Here’s Bafana Bafana’s BEST XI which should face Mexico at the World Cup

Bafana Bafana will face hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca.

This will be the first time in 16 years that South Africa plays a FIFA World Cup match, with their last appearance being against France in 2010, where they secured a 2-1 victory on home soil.

Unfortunately, that win was not enough, as they became the first host nation to be eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

With just over 10 weeks remaining until kick-off, Hugo Broos’ men are preparing for the match of their lives against El Tri. Here’s how Bafana could line up against Mexico:

GK: Ronwen Williams
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper is expected to start in goal. His leadership and command will be crucial if Bafana aims to secure a point or achieve a surprising win in Mexico. He must be on top of his game to deny the Mexican attackers.

RB: Khuliso Mudau
No right-back in South Africa or even the southern region of Africa compares to Mudau. He is widely regarded as one of the best right-backs on the continent due to his consistency, work ethic, and tackling ability.

Bafana need to bring their best against Mexico

CB: Ime Okon
With Siyabonga Ngezana injured, Okon seems likely to start ahead of the more experienced Nkosinathi Sibisi. Given Sibisi’s tendency to make mistakes, it may not be wise to expose him to Mexico’s relentless attack, reminiscent of Lucas Thwala’s struggles against Giovanni Dos Santos.

CB: Mbekezeli Mbokazi
The young defender will be vital for Bafana against Mexico. If he and Williams can communicate effectively, South Africa will have a chance. He needs to stay tight and limit Mexican attacks.

LB: Aubrey Modiba
Modiba must be sharp and committed in defense. Against El Tri, he is expected to play a more defensive role to counter Mexico’s quick wingers. Broos attempted to use Samukele Kabini against Cameroon, but that decision backfired, revealing Kabini’s vulnerabilities. Therefore, Modiba should definitely start all Bafana matches in the World Cup.

DM: Teboho Mokoena
Although Broos has previously trusted Sphephelo Sithole in the defensive midfield role, the Portuguese-based midfielder has not regained his 2023 AFCON form. He has been sluggish in recent matches, and starting him against Mexico may be risky. Mokoena should take on a more defensive role in this match.

CM: Thalente Mbatha
The Orlando Pirates midfielder is full of energy, which will be essential against Mexico. His control of the ball and ability to win possession will be key. He is a better option in central midfield than Jayden Adams, who could come on in the second half.

Mofokeng could be key for Bafana against Mexico

AM: Relebohile Mofokeng
While Themba Zwane is better suited for this role, if he isn’t fit or cannot play at a high intensity, then Mofokeng should be the clear choice for the number 10 position. He has impressed this season as a playmaker and could shine at the World Cup, potentially earning a move to Europe.

LW: Oswin Appollis
Appollis has claimed the left-wing position for himself. Currently, there are few wingers in Africa who outperform the former Polokwane City player. He can score, create opportunities, and aid in defensive efforts when needed.

RW: Tshepang Moremi
Though Moremi is typically more effective on the left, with Appollis occupying that position, he may be better off coming from the right and cutting in. If Iqraam Rayners is included in the final squad, he could also be a strong option.

FW: Lyle Foster
Foster may not get many chances against Mexico, but no other Bafana striker knows how to perform on the biggest stage better than he does. At 25, he is competing in one of the toughest leagues in the world, facing quality defenders week in and week out.

Who do you pick to start?
