Mashamaite outlines blueprint for Chiefs revival this season

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite has given his thoughts on how Amakhosi can improve this season and challenge for top honours in the future.

Despite starting the season on a high note, the Glamour Boys have had a dip in form mid-season, which has seen them trail log leaders Orlando Pirates by 15 points.

Speaking on Soccer Beat, the Chiefs legend highlighted some of the club’s problems this season.

“If you look at the centre-half pair, we are forever chopping and changing. Can we find one consistent goalkeeper who can play throughout the season like Itu did, like Brian Baloyi used to do, like Rowen Fernandez used to do? Can we find two solid centre-backs who can go 75 percent of the season playing together,” he said.

“Once we have seven or eight players or starters that are consistently performing, I think that’s when we can start talking about revival.”

Kaizer Chiefs having another tough season

Mashamaite argued that Chiefs needed a structure and for that to happen, the coaches needed to commit to a consistent starting lineup.

The former Bidvest Wits defender also defended Miguel Inacio, saying the Angolan international brought stability at the back.

“He brings a lot of stability. He is someone who will make a mistake one game and comes into the next game showing confidence. I think as a coach, he is someone who you can count on. If you had to build a solid structure, for me, you have to look at the skeleton.” he added.

Mashamaite said Chiefs season can only improve if they sort out the spine of the team.

“The spine of the team, the goalkeeper, centre-backs, the midfield and upfront. Other things you can just add as you go,” the ex-Amakhosi captain added.

Do you agree with Tefu on what Chiefs needs?
