  • Four suspects were killed and one injured during an intelligence-led operation in Yeoville targeting airport follow-home robberies.
  • A joint task force of police and private security engaged the group after the suspects opened fire while trailing a potential victim.
  • Authorities recovered three firearms at the scene, marking a significant breakthrough in dismantling the syndicate.

A high-stakes police operation in Yeoville ended in a fatal shoot-out on Wednesday as authorities moved to dismantle a notorious syndicate targeting travellers.

The group was known for tracking tourists and residents from the airport to their homes before robbing them upon arrival.

The operation was a coordinated effort between Crime Intelligence, Crime Response Teams, and private security firms.

Following a lead, the team shadowed a vehicle that was trailing an unsuspecting victim. When the suspects realised they were being followed, they opened fire on the officers.

In the ensuing exchange, four suspects were fatally wounded, while a fifth was hospitalised under police guard.

Fortunately, no law enforcement or security personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed that three pistols and ammunition were recovered at the scene. This intervention follows a string of recent arrests earlier this month, where two other members of the syndicate were denied bail.

“We believe we are cracking the back of this syndicate,” Muridili stated, noting that these targeted operations are successfully disrupting the gang’s ability to prey on arrivals.
