Mamelodi Sundowns Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has hailed the historic season the club had in 2021/2022, having made a clean sweep of domestic silverware.

Sundowns lifted the DStv Premiership title for a fifth successive time, and also won both domestic knockout competitions, the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

Motsepe, who is celebrating his birthday today, was speaking in the latest edition of the club’s digital magazine, and said the club had cemented their place in history.

“Some teams have won the PSL title in back-to-back seasons, and there are others who have won the league an impressive three times in a row; but there is only one Club in the country that has dominated the PSL for the past five seasons in succession, Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club!” Motsepe told the magazine.

“This record is one that we all can feel very proud of because it has cemented the name of Sundowns in South African football history.

“Many years from now, football historians will talk about a Football Club from Mamelodi that defended the Premier League title a famous five times without disruption; and when they talk about our club, others will wonder what it was like to be part of an institution as formidable as Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Whether you are a new supporter of the team, or a long-serving Sandawana, this moment belongs to us all. Well done to everyone!”

Thlopie Motsepe went on to praise the players and technical team for securing the domestic treble

“As I write this, we have just been crowned PSL Champions and have won the Nedbank Cup; these two trophies, combined with the MTN 8 Cup, have seen Sundowns complete a clean sweep of all the local cups that are on offer,” he added.

“They say good things come in threes, from the three wise men in the Bible, to the three wishes that the Genie granted Aladdin. We are so proud of the coaches for steering our team to this incredible treble of trophies!

“This is proof that we have a very special group of players in the club – and they have earned their place in Mamelodi Sundowns history.”
