‘Unfortunately Chiefs played Pirates at the wrong time’ – Bucs legend

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benson Mhlongo feels Kaizer Chiefs played the Buccaneers at the wrong time this past weekend.

Amakhosi were thumped 3-0 at the FNB Stadium in the first Soweto Derby of the season

Mhlongo said fans should not blame Chiefs for the defeat, as they found Pirates eager to win.

“You could tell from their eagerness that the Pirates players were competing for a spot in the Bafana team that will be announced soon. They have been performing well this season,” Mhlongo told KickOff.

“The path to the title will not be easy for Pirates; no team has ever won every game to secure the league. Some losses and draws are inevitable.”

The Buccaneers are currently top of the Betway Premiership with 11 matches left to play.

Mhlongo said the league is now in Pirates’ hands following their derby win.

“They are currently in exceptional form. Unfortunately, Chiefs faced Pirates at the wrong time. They are a well-organised team. To be honest, it is now up to Pirates to win the league,” he added.

Pirates legend on why Chiefs lost

“I am aware they lost to [Mamelodi] Sundowns last week, but prior to Sundowns scoring those two goals, Pirates had missed several scoring opportunities. Therefore, this league is very much within Pirates’ reach.”

Having beaten Chiefs, Pirates now turn their focus to Polokwane City as they look to solidify first place. Currently, the Buccaneers top the log with 41 points and are just ahead of their rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, by goal difference.

Amakhosi, on the otherhand have to play Richards Bay away from home, hoping to bounce back from three consecutive losses.
