  • Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala told the Ad Hoc Committee that his nickname comes from being a married man with nine children.
  • He is testifying on allegations of interference in the criminal justice system, including claims linking him to senior police officials.
  • Proceedings continue at Kgosi Mampuru Prison, where he is detained for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Controversial businessman Vusimuzi Cat Matlala has told Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee that he is a married man with nine children, and that is where his name Cat comes from.

Matlala is answering questions regarding his involvement in allegations of interference within the criminal justice system.

He was implicated in July this year when the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner accused him of having relationships with senior police officials and being the influence behind the Political Task Team getting disbanded.

Matlala gave a brief overview of his childhood and adult life.

“I was born and raised in Mamelodi East, Pretoria and I went to Letlhabile Secondary School. I registered my first official business in 2017, it was a security company and I serviced clients from construction sites and schools.”

He also mentioned that he was once sentenced to four years in 2001 for possession of stolen property; however, the sentence was later converted to correctional supervision.

He told the members of Parliament that he was raised by a single mother.

Earlier during the proceedings, the uMkhonto Wesizwe had requested that they continue with Matlala’s testimony on Thursday or Friday as his statements are not signed, something that was not well received by the EFF, the DA and ActionSA.

Matlala took an oath and vowed to be honest and transparent.

The proceedings continue at the Kgosi Mampuru Prison, where he’s detained for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend Tebogo Thobejane.

Matlala tells #AdHocCommittee he is married, and has nine children.

Arendse: Your nickname is Cat, do you have nine lives or nine children?

Matlala: Nine children.
