‘That’s a set-up,’ Kaizer Chiefs coaches accused of sabotage

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye has questioned Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef’s intentions.

This comes after the Glamour Boys suffered an opening-day loss in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

Chiefs travelled to Egypt to face Al Masry FC on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Amakhosi, a late goal meant the hosts earned a 2-1 victory over the Soweto giants.

Now, speaking after the match, Khanye has hit-out at the selections the Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches made on the day.

Kaizer Chiefs coaches exposed their intentions – Khanye

Junior Khanye was left surprised by Kaze and Ben Youssef’s decision to start struggling attacker Ashley Du Preez on sunday.

Du Preez has struggled for form this season. The speedy attacker has made just three starts for the club this season.

The Kaizer Chiefs winger is yet to score this season. In fact, his form has been so off that he failed to make the Amakhosi match-day squad in their last three league games.

Now, the decision to start him in a crucial match, away in Egypt, has left Khanye deeply disturbed.

“I’m talking about the two co-coaches. You can’t start Du Preez in today’s game with such intensity. Are you exposing that you want to let him go, I’m not too sure,” Junior Khanye said on IdiskiTV as quoted by IdiskiTimes.

“He lacks match fitness for this kind of a game so he’s not going to give you anything. We are talking about a high-profile game… I mean sometimes he also doesn’t even make the 18-man match-day squad, but you are taking him straight from the stands into the starting 11. That’s a set-up and I’m also not surprised why the boy wasn’t functioning.”

Du Preez’s numbers in the PSL

Ashley Du Preez has already made over 160 professional appearances. The speedy striker has 32 goals to his name while assisting 17 more.

He joined Kaizer Chiefs back in 2022 from Stellenbosch. Given his current struggles at the club, it remains to be seen if he’ll remain at Naturena next season. Although his talent can’t be questioned, a move away from the club might benefit his career going-forward.

Du Preez is currently 28-years-old. He has just two Bafana Bafana caps to his name, and will undoubtedly be desperate to add more to his name over the next few years.
