Injury-hit Themba Zwane on AFCON chances

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane is in a race against time to make the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The veteran playmaker hasn’t seen much game time in two seasons due to injuries. “Mshishi” has not featured much under Miguel Cardoso and with the Portuguese looking to win both the CAF Champions League and Betway Premiership, he might not opt to play without Zwane in the coming games.

The 36-year-old has finally opened up about his persistent injuries, which have kept him out of the Bafana Bafana team for a year.

“You want to push yourself. You want to push yourself until you maintain your standard. After that injury, I tried to stretch, but I pulled my quad, and I was so disappointed. And in my mind, I was like, ‘Eish, there we go again’.

“I need to start afresh with the rehab and so on. I was so disappointed, but maybe after two days, I told myself that it happened. I can’t change it. I need to do the process of recovering, and just be strong. And thanks to the guys in the team, they support me all the time. So, ja,” Zwane said as per iDiski Times.

Themba Zwane eyeing the Afcon

With just over months left to go until the AFCON kicks off, Mshishi has just a handful of matches to impress Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

“No I think overall it’s excitement, knowing for sure that if I can be 100% fit and I can contribute for my club, then I can contribute for the national team,” Zwne added.

“So for me, it’s just to be positive and believe that from now on, I need to push myself, do more strengthening, extra training, so that I can be 100%.”

Can Mshishi make the AFCON squad next month?
