Duba Silences Galaxy: Chiefs Hit Back With Carling Cup Hat-Trick Humiliation

TS Galaxy talked all week. Wandile Duba answered with three goals, and the first hat-trick of the Carling Knockout Cup.

After a week of social media taunts from the Rockets, Kaizer Chiefs did their talking on the field at FNB Stadium, winning 3-0 to reach the next round.

It was exactly what Amakhosi needed. They arrived winless in five matches, nursing the wounds of Friday’s penalty shootout exit from the Confederation Cup against Red Arrows.

Pressure on Fernando Da Cruz was mounting, with sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior publicly backing his coach while shooting down rumours of a Manqoba Mngqithi approach as “complete lies.”

Reeve Frosler had promised the team would “put our best foot forward” and chase silverware. They delivered.

After a difficult first half, Galaxy would have fancied holding Chiefs until penalties. Esau Mtsweni’s side had even dug up memories of their 2009 Nedbank Cup final win over Amakhosi for inspiration.

But Duba put Chiefs ahead in the 48th minute, then pounced to make it 2-0 in the 62nd after the Galaxy keeper saved a penalty. He completed his hat-trick in the 66th.

Duba’s third came with a message. He made hand gestures at Galaxy suggesting they talk too much but cannot walk the talk.

Chiefs fans finally had something to cheer, and a cheque of close to R7 million is now within reach. The Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates is next.
