Finally, a suspected police killer for a murder committed in 2022 was arrested in Mpumalanga after the intervention by the Hawks.
POLICE ARREST SUSPECT FOR A MEMBER’S MURDER
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed that a 30-year-old suspected police killer has been arrested in a joint collaboration of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation based in Secunda and Secunda K9 in Evander.
“It is reported that on 18 February 2022, the late police officer, WO Hlatshwayo was attacked and shot while entering his home by unknown suspects. The victim was transported by to a Provincial hospital in Piet Retief and later to Trichardt Medi Clinic in critical condition for treatment,” he detailed.

“The member later succumbed to his injuries.”

HOW THE MURDERER WAS TRACED AND ARRESTED
He added that an investigation into the brutal murder of the warrant officer was conducted and one of the suspects was identified.
“Today, 18 May 2023, the investigating team followed up on information of the whereabouts of the suspect and arrested him in Evander. More arrests are expected. The suspect will appear in the Piet Retief Magistrates’ court soon,” Colonel Mogale explained.

Meanwhile, the South African Police Services (SAPS) bade farewell to a fallen member Sergeant Lwando Lawrence Bunga this past weekend.
According to police spokesperson Captain Hazel Mqala, Bunga was shot and killed on 1 May 2023 while responding to an attempted robbery at a Fidelity Base in West Bank East London.
“Sergeant Bunga was killed along with a security guard who was injured when a gang of heavily armed men bombed the office in an attempt to gain access to the Fidelity vault,” explained Mqala.
“This indicates that we are under attack from the very communities we are attempting to protect. Nonetheless, we will persevere,” the Provincial Commissioner, General Nomthetheleli Mene said at the funeral.
