11 Arrested In Connection With Taxi Violence In Port St Johns

A total of 11 individuals have been apprehended in relation to the ongoing taxi violence in Port St Johns, Eastern Cape, a situation that has resulted in the loss of at least three lives and numerous injuries.

The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, announced on Wednesday that the number of arrests had increased from nine to 11.

The suspects are facing charges including murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, discharging firearms in a built-up municipality area, and public violence. They are expected to appear in the Port St Johns Magistrate’s Court in the near future.

The incident in question occurred on Tuesday when two taxi associations engaged in a shootout at the Port St Johns taxi rank.

Tragically, three security officials from one taxi association in Lusikisiki lost their lives, while five individuals from the Port St Johns taxi association sustained gunshot wounds. Additionally, an innocent 11-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet and immediately rushed to the hospital.

As the investigation progresses, the police have made significant seizures, including 15 firearms consisting of pistols, AK-47 rifles, shotguns, and rifles.

Furthermore, 328 rounds of ammunition were confiscated. In response to the escalating violence, a substantial number of police officers have been deployed to the area to ensure stability and maintain a strong presence.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has emphasized the importance of dialogue between the police and relevant stakeholders, as they work towards resolving the conflict between the two taxi associations. The goal is to put an end to the ongoing feud and restore peace and order in Port St Johns.

Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene stated, “Our multi-disciplinary forces have made significant progress since the violence erupted on Tuesday. Our police officers will continue to maintain high visibility, and we are fully committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and commuters in the area.”
