The walls appear to be closing in on suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Department chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, following his arrest.
Echoing the fate of several witnesses at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, accountability has now caught up with the senior official.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Madlanga Commission Task Team arrested the 50-year-old on charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice.
Mkhwanazi was reportedly taken into custody on Saturday morning, 18 April 2026, at his home in Gauteng.
Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with authorities still searching for additional suspects linked to the case.
The arrests stem from a broader probe into alleged corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said no further details would be released at this stage. She indicated that media briefings would follow after the suspects’ court appearance.
All suspects are expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 April 2026.
