Shebeshxt remains behind bars
Popular Lekompo musician Shebeshxt, real name, Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke returned to the Polokwane Regional Court on Friday, where his legal troubles intensified after the State added 11 more charges against him.
The 31-year-old artist is now facing a total of 20 charges linked to a series of serious allegations, including attempted murder, assault, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and malicious damage to property.
During court proceedings, Chauke’s lawyer, Michael Khumalo, expressed frustration over delays in receiving the case docket, saying the defence had requested the documents while the matter was still being handled at district court level.
“We requested the docket for purposes of beginning preparations, particularly due to the number and nature of the charges preferred against the accused,” Khumalo told the court.
According to the defence, the growing list of charges has made preparation for the case increasingly urgent.
Despite their concerns, Khumalo said they accepted the State’s assurance that the docket would be handed over by next week.
Prosecutors requested that the matter be postponed to allow the defence enough time to study the documents once received.
The court also heard that another State advocate could take over the matter during the next appearance due to scheduling commitments.
Khumalo further revealed plans to bring an additional advocate onto Chauke’s legal team as the case moves forward.
The musician remains behind bars after his recent bail application was denied.
His legal representatives confirmed they are preparing to challenge the ruling through an appeal process.
Health concerns surrounding the artist were also raised in court, with the defence requesting that he receive medical attention while in custody.
It was heard that Chauke would temporarily remain at the Polokwane police station to make access to treatment easier before any possible transfer to a correctional facility.
The matter was postponed to May 28 for further proceedings.
