SAPS warns of deadly drink spiking syndicates targeting nightlife patrons

SAPS has warned of organised syndicates using young women to spike patrons’ drinks at social venues before robbing them of vehicles and cash.
Officials confirmed that some victims have died from drug overdoses, while female patrons face high risks of sexual assault and murder.
The public is urged to stay in trusted groups, monitor their drinks, and share their live locations to combat the rising trend in Gauteng and the North West.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued an urgent warning regarding organised criminal syndicates targeting patrons at clubs, taverns, and social events.

According to police, these groups are increasingly using young women to identify and lure men before drugging and robbing them of valuables, including vehicles, mobile phones, and cash.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe revealed that these syndicates operate primarily in Gauteng and the North West. The typical method involves a woman persuading a target to move to a secondary location, such as a hotel or private residence, where their drink is covertly spiked. In some tragic cases, victims have died from overdoses caused by the substances used.

The police emphasised that women are also at significant risk. Cases have been documented where female victims were spiked and subsequently subjected to assault, rape, or murder. These attacks have been carried out by both strangers and, in some instances, known acquaintances encountered at entertainment venues.

In response to the “severe physical and psychological consequences” of these crimes, Brigadier Mathe urged the public to remain vigilant. Safety recommendations include never leaving drinks unattended, avoiding leaving venues with strangers, and staying in trusted groups.

Authorities also advised the public to share their locations with friends and family and to plan safe transport in advance. Investigations are currently ongoing as law enforcement intensifies efforts to dismantle the organised groups responsible for these attacks.
