  • NUMSA has condemned US President Donald Trump’s “ruthless” military attack on Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
  • The union claims that the action violates international law and is intended to undermine the Bolivarian Revolution.
  • South Africa has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting to address the crisis.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has called on relevant stakeholders to urgently engage US President Donald Trump, warning that his actions risk making the world unsafe for humanity.

This follows confirmation by the United States that it carried out a “large-scale” military strike against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Trump said on Saturday that US forces apprehended Maduro after bombing the capital, Caracas, and other cities, marking a dramatic climax to a months-long standoff between the two leaders.

NUMSA described the actions as a violation of international law, arguing that the invasion of Venezuela is aimed at strangling and destroying the Bolivarian revolution.

“NUMSA makes no apology for naming what we see: Trump is a savage, a ruthless bully and a champion of colonialism and imperialism. He is a purveyor of the most backward racism, a pathetic patriarch, and an unapologetic misogynist,” the union said in a statement.

The union further accused Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of being war mongers, saying their “hands drip with the blood of innocents” and describing them as racist white supremacists of the twenty-first century.

Meanwhile, the South African government has called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting, urging the council to convene immediately to address the unfolding situation.
