- A teacher has been killed and another critically injured in separate shootings in Ekurhuleni.
- Authorities say robbery has been ruled out, raising fears of targeted attacks on educators.
- SADTU has warned of a growing pattern of violence and is calling for urgent action.
Mysterious attacks in Ekurhuleni have left one teacher dead and another fighting for his life in hospital.
On Monday, 13 April 2026, a Barcelona Primary School teacher and union member, Tshepo Mankge, was gunned down in front of his children in Daveyton. He died due to the shooting.
In a separate incident, the acting principal of Lethulwazi Comprehensive School in Vosloorus was shot and critically injured while on his way home. He was rushed to hospital and remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
The motive for both shootings remains unknown, with robbery ruled out as none of the victims’ belongings were taken.
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) said the incidents point to deliberate and targeted attacks.
“We are alarmed by the growing pattern of violence in Ekurhuleni directed at school leadership, particularly principals, deputy principals and heads of departments. Since 2023, nearly ten educators have lost their lives in the region alone, yet justice continues to evade the victims and their families,” the union said.
SADTU warned that the failure to apprehend those responsible emboldens criminals and sends a dangerous message that educators are easy targets.
The union has called for these killings to be prioritised, thoroughly investigated and for those responsible to be brought to justice without delay.
