Mbokazi Among World Cup’s Best Young Defenders

Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi continues to make headlines at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being ranked among the tournament’s top young defenders.

The 20-year-old centre-back has emerged as one of South Africa’s standout performers in the competition being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Mbokazi’s impressive displays have not gone unnoticed, with international scouts and football analysts closely monitoring his performances.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Mbokazi was ranked fourth among Under-23 defenders after the first round of World Cup matches.

The ranking focuses on players’ defensive contributions, including ground duels won, interceptions, defensive efficiency and the frequency of goals conceded while on the pitch.

The former Orlando Pirates defender earned his high ranking following an outstanding display against Mexico.

During that match, Mbokazi won five of his nine ground duels, made four clearances, one interception, blocked a shot and completed three recoveries.

Only New Zealand’s Paul Okon, Ghana’s Jonas Adjetey and Spain star Gavi ranked ahead of the South African youngster.

The recognition further strengthens Mbokazi’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s brightest defensive prospects and could increase interest from clubs across Europe.

With Bafana Bafana still fighting for a place in the knockout stages, Mbokazi’s performances have become one of the biggest positives from South Africa’s World Cup campaign so far.
