A 21-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were killed in a mass shooting in Wesbank, Malmesbury, early on Sunday, 12 July 2026. Six adults and a young child were also wounded.
Daily Voice reported that the woman was pregnant. Police have deployed specialised teams and drones as they search for those responsible. Investigators have not confirmed a motive, although they are examining whether the attack may be gang-related.
Gunmen target group in Godetia Street
The Malmesbury mass shooting happened at about 04:40 in Godetia Street. According to Daily Voice, a group had gathered around a fire when gunmen allegedly approached through a neighbouring property and opened fire.
Emergency personnel declared the woman and man dead at the scene. Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said six adults and an infant were admitted to hospital.
The child was later transferred to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Police said all seven injured victims were in a stable condition. EWN also confirmed the casualty figures and the child’s transfer for specialist treatment.
A witness told Daily Voice that residents helped the wounded while waiting for emergency services. The publication reported that the child had been in his mother’s arms during the attack.
Police investigate possible gang link
Acting Western Cape provincial police commissioner Major-General Luyanda Damoyi visited the scene. He said investigators were following all available leads and had brought specialised units and drone teams into the area.
“We are following all leads,” Damoyi said, adding that police hoped to make arrests soon.
Daily Voice reported that police took one person in for questioning at the scene. However, authorities had not publicly confirmed an arrest or charge by Monday morning.
Police have also not released the victims’ names. The number of attackers, the weapons used and the reason for the shooting remain under investigation.
Safety forum condemns shooting
The Cape Flats Safety Forum condemned the Malmesbury mass shooting and called for a strong law-enforcement response.
Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs urged investigators to “leave no stone unturned” in finding those responsible.
Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais also called for residents, community leaders and law-enforcement agencies to cooperate.
“Collective action by government, law enforcement, community leaders, and residents is essential to restore peace and protect lives,” Marais said.
The Malmesbury mass shooting investigation remains active. Police had not announced any charged suspects by the time of publication.
