Thousands of Cape Town commuters could face major travel disruptions on Thursday as Golden Arrow bus drivers prepare to strike from midnight.
The National Union for All Sectors (NUFAS) has given notice that its members intend to down tools from 10 September 2026 following a dispute with Golden Arrow over disciplinary procedures.
Golden Arrow has approached the courts in an attempt to stop the industrial action and warned passengers that services could be affected if the strike proceeds.
Golden Arrow challenges planned strike
Golden Arrow head of corporate affairs and human resources John Dammert rejected claims that the company applies its disciplinary procedures unfairly.
He said the company’s policies were implemented in line with labour legislation, collective agreements and established procedures.
Golden Arrow said employees who dispute disciplinary action can use mechanisms available through the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council.
The company added that it respects employees’ right to participate in lawful and peaceful industrial action but said passenger and employee safety could not be compromised.
Disciplinary procedures at centre of dispute
The dispute dates back to November last year.
NUFAS claims drivers previously faced a six-month final warning followed by a 12-month final warning before dismissal.
The union alleges that Golden Arrow changed the process to a six-month final warning followed by dismissal. Golden Arrow denies making that change.
An earlier attempt by the company to secure a final interdict against NUFAS failed.
Labour Court Judge Robert Daniels dismissed the application on 1 September after finding that Golden Arrow had not established a clear right to the interdict it sought.
Union approaches taxi associations
NUFAS deputy general secretary Vuyo Lufele said the strike was a last resort after attempts to resolve the dispute failed.
The union has also approached taxi associations CATA and CODETA about increasing taxi capacity if Golden Arrow services are disrupted.
Golden Arrow said it would provide commuters with further information after the outcome of its latest court proceedings.
Passengers have been warned of possible disruption while the legal process continues ahead of Thursday’s planned strike.
