There’s nothing more frustrating than carefully applying your favourite lipstick, only to find it has disappeared after your first coffee or meal.

The good news? A few simple makeup tricks can help your lipstick stay fresh and vibrant for longer — without constant touch-ups.

Start with smooth lips

Long-lasting lipstick starts with good preparation. In The Gloss recommends gently exfoliating your lips to remove dry, flaky skin, then apply a lightweight lip balm.

Give it a few minutes to absorb before applying colour, and blot away any excess. This creates a smoother base and helps prevent lipstick from settling into dry patches.

Use a lip liner

According to TFG Media, lip liner is one of the easiest ways to make lipstick last longer. Choose a shade close to your natural lip colour or match it to your lipstick.

Outline your lips before filling them in completely with the pencil. The liner creates a base for your lipstick and can also help prevent colour from feathering around the edges.

Apply lipstick in thin layers

Instead of applying one thick coat, try building your colour gradually. Apply a thin layer of lipstick, gently blot with a tissue, and then add another light layer.

This technique removes excess product while leaving pigment behind, helping your lipstick wear more evenly.

Be strategic with powder

According to Vogue, adjusting the finish goes a long way in locking in a look. For traditional, non-glossy lipsticks, a small amount of translucent setting powder can help extend wear.

Place a thin tissue over your lips and lightly dust powder over it. Avoid using too much, as it can make your lips feel dry.

Choose the right formula

Matte and long-wear lipsticks generally stay put for longer than creamy or glossy formulas. However, they can feel drier, so keeping your lips moisturised is important.

With the right preparation and application technique, you can enjoy your lipstick for longer — and spend less time checking the mirror for touch-ups.
