Award-winning American artist Doechii had a few South Africans feeling proud when she used a gqom song in one of her online videos. Her post, which humorously touched on inquisitiveness, had many people feeling like they could relate.

The 27-year-old Alter Ego hitmaker, born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, shared a video of herself sitting outside in a bikini while typing away on her laptop, presumably at a resort or beach, sipping on a cocktail. The song of choice was Izamawala (Goldmax Bootleg) by Goldmax, featuring Dladla Mshunqisi.

She wrote the following in her post: “Me randomly locking in deciding that I need to learn about everything that ever existed in one day.”

Doechii’s post sparks a conversation

Several people on the internet took to Doechii’s comment section to express their thoughts about her relatable post, while some South Africans proudly made themselves known.

South African media personality Anele Zondo added, “Qgom Doechii loading.”

@joshuamitchellmusic shared under the post, “And somehow you come out of it more confused about the world than you’ve ever been.”

@one__neo wrote to the superstar, “Okay, the use of gqom tells me you need to come to South Africa.”

An excited @usiqha commented, “Gqom Doechii? Someone introduce Moonchild Sanelly to Doechii. I need this collab.”

Doechii’s core music genres

The Florida-born artist is primarily known for her hip-hop, R&B, and pop sounds, often blending traditional rap with soul, pop, and experimental elements. Growing up in the city of Tampa, Doechii is heavily influenced by the Southern rap scene and caught the world’s attention with her song Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.
