Department of Sport, Arts and Culture mourns passing of Jayden Adams
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has expressed profound shock and sadness following the untimely death of South African footballer Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Adams, a talented midfielder who played for Mamelodi Sundowns and represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, passed away just weeks after helping South Africa advance to the knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history. He featured in all three group stage matches during the tournament.
In a statement, Minister Gayton McKenzie said: “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25.”
McKenzie added that South African football had lost one of its brightest young talents. “Our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates, and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” he said.
The cause of Adams’ death has not yet been confirmed, and authorities have appealed for privacy for his family and restraint from speculation.
Tributes have poured in from across the football community, with the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) describing his passing as a devastating loss and remembering his humility and extraordinary talent.
Adams had recently helped Mamelodi Sundowns secure the CAF Champions League title. His dedication to the national team was particularly notable, as he played shortly after learning of his grandmother’s death.
