Radio fraternity mourns Munghana Lonene FM presenter Mafosi Chauke
The radio and broadcasting fraternity in Limpopo is mourning the death of veteran broadcaster Foster “Mafosi – Try by Force” Chauke.
Chauke, who was from Giyani, was a familiar voice to Xitsonga-speaking audiences and built a career spanning community and mainstream radio broadcasting.
He was a presenter on Munghana Lonene FM, where he co-hosted the station’s signature Xitsonga traditional music programme, Timintsu ta Xitsonga, alongside Quinton “The Qunitonizer” Baloyi. The programme is currently listed by Munghana Lonene FM as a Saturday show featuring Chauke and Baloyi.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced in 2023 that Chauke would join Baloyi on Timintsu ta Xitsonga, describing it as the station’s signature Xitsonga traditional music programme.
In 2024, the SABC again listed Chauke and Baloyi as the presenters of the programme. The broadcaster also said Chauke was responsible for producing documentaries for Phuphu ya Rixaka, a programme focused on profiling people and celebrating the intellectual heritage of the Vatsonga people.
Chauke’s broadcasting career began in community radio. In 2016, he was reported as a presenter at Giyani Community Radio, where he hosted programmes including XiTsonga Top 20 and a religious programme. He was also described at the time as an award-winning radio journalist.
His work in community broadcasting later led to a prominent role at Munghana Lonene FM, where he continued to use radio to promote Xitsonga music, culture and community stories.
The SABC’s 2023 line-up also listed Chauke as a producer on the Sunday programme Lathela, further reflecting his involvement in the station beyond his on-air presenting duties.
News of Chauke’s death has prompted mourning among listeners and members of the broadcasting fraternity, particularly in Giyani and the wider Xitsonga-speaking community.
His social media accounts were still active on Friday, 25 September, shortly before news of his death emerged.
