Bafana Bafana kept their hopes of reaching the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive after battling to a 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second Group A match on Thursday night at Atlanta Stadium in the United States.
The match got off to a difficult start for the South Africans, with Czechia dominating the early exchanges and launching wave after wave of attacks.
As expected, Czechia broke the deadlock in the sixth minute when Michal Sadílek found space inside the penalty area, connected with a pass from Alexandr Sojka and calmly slotted the ball inside the right post to make it 1-0.
Bafana Bafana responded positively and fought back with determination. Their attacking players created several opportunities, but poor finishing prevented them from finding an equaliser.
Oswin Appollis came close in the 12th minute with a powerful long-range effort, but his shot was blocked by the Czech defense.
Aubrey Modiba then tried his luck a minute later, only to see his effort sail wide of the target. Thapelo Maseko also threatened in the 16th minute but failed to trouble goalkeeper Matěj Kovář.
As the game intensified, midfielder Tebogo Mokoena found himself in trouble after committing a reckless challenge that prompted referee Tori Penso to issue a yellow card. The booking means Mokoena will miss Bafana Bafana’s final group-stage match against South Korea due to suspension.
South Africa continued to search for an equaliser before halftime. Mokoena came close with a long-range effort from a rebound, but his shot flew high over the crossbar. Four minutes into first-half stoppage time, Maseko reacted quickly to a loose ball inside the penalty area, but his effort was cleared before it could trouble the goalkeeper.
Czechia held onto their lead for much of the second half despite sustained pressure from Bafana Bafana, who repeatedly pushed forward in search of a breakthrough.
The South Africans’ persistence finally paid off in the 83rd minute when Pavel Šulc handled the ball inside the penalty area while attempting to clear Maseko’s goal-bound effort. Referee Penso pointed to the spot, and Mokoena who was later voted Man of the Match stepped up to calmly convert the penalty, bringing the score level at 1-1 with seven minutes remaining.
Bafana Bafana nearly snatched a dramatic winner in the 88th minute when Relebohile Mofokeng unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box. However, Kovář produced a brilliant save to deny the Orlando Pirates star and keep the scores level.
Mofokeng continued to trouble the Czech defense in the closing stages, but neither side could find a winning goal before the final whistle.
The result leaves Bafana Bafana’s qualification hopes firmly alive, heading into their final Group A encounter against South Korea.
