African Dreams on the Line: Cape Verde and Egypt chase history in the FIFA World Cup

The final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage promises drama as two African nations, Cape Verde and Egypt, prepare for decisive matches that could secure places in the new 32-team knockout stage.

Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia

Cape Verde have been one of the surprise packages of the tournament. In their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, the Blue Sharks, who are currently on the third position with two points have earned admiration with determined performances, including draws, a goalless against Spain and 2-2 against Uruguay. They now face Saudi Arabia at the Houston Stadium in Houston on Saturday morning in Group H (kickoff at 2am SA time) knowing that victory could send them into the Round of 32, depending on the outcome of the other Group H match between the same Spain and Uruguay.

For the small island nation, qualification would be historic. Every tackle, every pass and every goal could become part of football folklore.
Saudi Arabia who are lying on the fourth position with one point, however, have everything to play for as well. Their coach has acknowledged that his team is still developing, but they know a win could also keep their World Cup dream alive.
Cape Verde’s players will carry not only their own ambitions but also the hopes of millions across Africa, aiming to prove that determination can overcome reputation.

Egypt vs Iran

Meanwhile, Egypt who are on top of the log with four points enter their final group match against Iran in Group G at Lumen Field in Seattlet at 5am on Saturday with qualification also within reach. The Pharaohs have shown resilience throughout the tournament and know that another strong performance could see them advance to the knockout rounds depending on the final Group G standings and results elsewhere.

Iran will present a formidable challenge, bringing tactical discipline and attacking quality. Egypt will rely on composure, teamwork, and clinical finishing in what promises to be one of the most compelling fixtures of the day.

A Continent United

As kick-off approaches, supporters from Cape Town to Cairo, Dakar to Johannesburg will be watching with anticipation.
Cape Verde dream of completing one of the greatest underdog stories in World Cup history. Egypt hope to add another proud chapter to African football’s rich legacy.
Should both nations achieve victory, African football would celebrate another milestone, with two more representatives extending their World Cup journeys into the inaugural 32-team knockout stage.
The stage is set. The pressure is immense. And for Cape Verde and Egypt, ninety minutes could change history forever.
