Milnerton High pupil bulied
The mother of a Milnerton High School learner who was brutally assaulted in what is believed to be a violent initiation ritual has broken her silence, calling for accountability and stronger protection for students.
The shocking attack, filmed on October 16, allegedly involved Grade 11 boys, including some members of the school’s first-team rugby squad, who beat several Grade 10 learners with sticks and other objects while others watched.
“My son, a Grade 10 student at Milnerton High School, has been subjected to bullying, physical assault, harassment and emotional abuse by a group of boys, including members of the rugby first team,” the victim’s mother said in a statement.
“These 18-year-olds, who should embody strength, discipline and leadership, have instead chosen to intimidate and harm others. I’m speaking out for my son and for every student who has been silenced, dismissed, or ignored. It is the school’s duty to protect its learners.”
United Democratic Movement (UDM) MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, who is assisting the family, condemned the assault, saying some victims sustained serious injuries and have since received threats from those implicated.
“Video footage circulating on social media appears to confirm that this was not an isolated act of bullying but an organised initiation assault,” Kwankwa said.
There must be accountability not only from the perpetrators but from school authorities who failed to prevent such behaviour.”
WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said counselling has been provided for the affected learners and confirmed that the department is monitoring the disciplinary proceedings closely.
“We urge members of the public to stop sharing the video and report it as harmful content,” she said.
Dr. Shaheda Omar from the Teddy Bear Foundation stressed that curbing school violence requires collaboration between parents and educators.
“Violent or bullying behaviour often stems from psychological, social and environmental factors,” she explained.
“Schools must have clear anti-bullying policies, visible communication and restorative disciplinary measures to ensure a safe environment for every learner.”
