Soweto Derby: Coaches ready, now it is time for players to do the talking

The Soweto Derby involving Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates might have lost some of its historical spark, but its popularity remains unrivalled, making it one of the biggest football spectacles on the African continent.

With the stage set at the FNB Stadium for this weekend’s encounter between the traditional arch-rivals, all eyes will be on the two Soweto giants as they battle for three valuable Betway Premiership points in a sold-out clash scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at 3.30pm.

Both coaches have had their time to prepare their troops and express their expectations ahead of the showdown. Now, it is up to the players to do the talking on the field of play in this 186th edition of one of South African football’s most celebrated rivalries.

Although the derby has occasionally struggled to reproduce the intensity and drama associated with its golden years, the passion surrounding the fixture remains undeniable.

For thousands of supporters inside the stadium and millions watching across the country and beyond, Saturday’s encounter is about much more than football. It is a contest for bragging rights, pride and the psychological advantage that comes with beating one’s fiercest rivals.

Orlando Pirates will enter the encounter with confidence following an impressive run of results, while Kaizer Chiefs will be eager to demonstrate that the derby remains a different proposition in which form and league positions do not always determine the outcome.

Both sides also go into the match on the back of convincing 3-0 victories in the Carling Knockout Cup, with Pirates defeating Milford FC and Chiefs overcoming TS Galaxy.

The results have provided both camps with a timely confidence boost ahead of a fixture that could have significant implications for their respective league ambitions.

Ouaddou embraces the favourites tag

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has accepted that his team will be regarded as favourites, given their recent form and status as reigning league champions.

However, the Moroccan tactician is under no illusion that their position makes them guaranteed winners against their oldest rivals.

“We need to have this positive arrogance. We have to accept this position of favourites because we were champions,” Ouaddou said ahead of the derby.

“But at the same time, we play against new management. Chiefs have a new coach, new energy, and new ideas, and they are doing a good job.”

The Pirates mentor believes his players must approach the match with the right mentality and execute their game plan if they are to emerge victorious.

“To be favourites doesn’t mean that you’re going to win. Football is open, and we know Chiefs is a big club,” he added.

Ouaddou also emphasised that his players must not allow the pressure associated with the occasion to prevent them from expressing themselves on the pitch.

“When you are in sports, you need to have positive pressure to bring happiness to yourself and those around you. I told my players pressure must not stop them from doing good things and showing their capacity to play.”

He expects an entertaining contest characterised by intensity, physical commitment and quality football, with both teams eager to give their supporters something to celebrate.

For Pirates, victory would strengthen their position in the title race and potentially move them to the top of the standings, depending on other results.

Da Cruz confident Chiefs can rise to the occasion

On the opposite side, Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz is preparing for his first Soweto Derby as the man in charge of Amakhosi.

The Frenchman recognises the significance of the occasion and has described it as one of the biggest matches in African football.

“It’s the most important game in South Africa. I think it’s one of the best games in Africa. It divides the country, and I think it’s a good game for the South African people,” Da Cruz said.

Despite acknowledging the quality of their opponents, the Chiefs coach insists his team is ready for the challenge.

“We worked well this week with the team. We are confident, but we know it’s a difficult game against a good team, a big team.”

The victory over TS Galaxy has lifted the mood in the Chiefs camp, particularly after a difficult period that included disappointing results and elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup qualifiers.

Da Cruz believes the performance against Galaxy has given his players the confidence they need, although he remains conscious of the need for continued improvement.

“When you score three goals and don’t concede, you’ve got a lot of confidence. But we always want to improve the team, even when we win.”

Chiefs have also been struggling to maintain consistency in the league, and Saturday’s match presents an opportunity to make a statement against their fiercest rivals.

Da Cruz is determined to ensure that his players do not approach the encounter with an underdog mentality.

“We want to play a good game in front of our fans. We know it is going to be an emotional game with lots of passion around the field, but the most important thing is to be focused on how we want to play the game.”

The Chiefs mentor knows that a positive result would not only boost the team’s confidence but also help them close the gap on Pirates.

Sibisi wants Pirates to let football do the talking

Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi believes his teammates are well prepared for the challenge and are determined to maintain their momentum.

The defender has indicated that the players have had the derby in mind during their recent fixtures and are eager to demonstrate the quality of their preparations.

“We’ve been playing games, but we had one eye on the derby. Come Saturday, I think the boys will showcase what we’ve been preparing for,” Sibisi said.

The Pirates skipper acknowledges that the fixture carries enormous expectations, not only for the players but also for the supporters who regard victory over Chiefs as one of the highlights of the season.

“For us, it’s about the three points. There’s pride involved, not only for us as players but for our supporters as well. The momentum has to continue.”

Sibisi has also called for a competitive but clean encounter, suggesting that his team would rather concentrate on creating scoring opportunities than become distracted by unnecessary physical confrontations.

The Pirates captain believes the Buccaneers must remain focused on their own game and take advantage of the opportunities that come their way.

Petersen rallies Chiefs troops

Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has also expressed confidence in his teammates, insisting that unity and determination will be crucial in the battle against Pirates.

Petersen believes the players must be prepared to give everything for the badge, particularly in a match where supporters expect nothing less than maximum commitment.

“The most important thing for me is the team. It’s not about me, what people think of me, or say about me. It’s about the team, and me making sure that heading into this weekend everyone is ready to fight, and fight our socks off,” Petersen said.

He expressed faith in the squad’s ability to rise to the occasion, emphasising the importance of togetherness.

“I know that the soldiers we have are ready to go to war. It’s about them, and believing in each and every one of them. I know in return they do the same. It’s all about unity and togetherness.”

Petersen is also refusing to be distracted by the gap between the two teams on the league standings.

He believes the season remains long enough for Chiefs to recover lost ground and finish strongly.

For the Amakhosi captain, the immediate priority is to secure a positive result against Pirates and keep his team’s ambitions alive.

A battle for pride and precious points

With both coaches expressing confidence in their respective teams, the responsibility now rests with the players to translate their preparations into a convincing performance.

Pirates will hope their recent form and attacking quality give them the advantage, while Chiefs will be banking on the occasion, their renewed confidence and the determination to silence their rivals.

The contrasting fortunes of the two teams have added another layer of intrigue to the encounter, but the history of the Soweto Derby suggests that Saturday’s outcome will ultimately be decided on the pitch.

For Pirates, it is an opportunity to underline their championship credentials and strengthen their position in the title race.

For Chiefs, it is a chance to upset the odds, restore confidence among their supporters and prove that they remain a force to be reckoned with in South African football.

The sold-out FNB Stadium is expected to provide a fitting backdrop for the occasion, with supporters from both camps hoping their teams will deliver a performance worthy of the rivalry.
