Hangwani Maumela Moves To Reclaim R70m Sandton Mansion From Npa

Controversial businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela has launched a legal bid to reclaim his R70 million mansion in Sandhurst, Sandton, by seeking to overturn a High Court forfeiture order granted to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), according to Sunday Times.

In July 2026, the Johannesburg High Court granted the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit a final forfeiture order covering assets valued at approximately R325 million linked to Maumela.

The assets include his luxury Sandhurst mansion, an R88 million property in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, and another property at Zimbali Estate in KwaZulu-Natal. Several luxury vehicles, including four Lamborghinis and a Bentley, as well as a boat and trailer, are also included in the order.

According to the *Sunday Times*, the NPA confirmed that it received an application from Maumela’s legal team on Friday seeking to have the forfeiture order rescinded.

NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the authority would fast-track its response to ensure the matter is finalised.

The legal challenge has delayed plans to sell the seized assets, with proceeds intended to be returned to the Gauteng Department of Health.

The forfeiture order is linked to investigations into the alleged R2 billion corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital, which was exposed by whistleblower Babita Deokaran before she was assassinated outside her Johannesburg home in August 2021.

Investigators have linked Maumela to an alleged network of companies that benefited from irregular hospital contracts. The NPA maintains that the assets were acquired through proceeds of unlawful activities.

Despite being implicated in the scandal, Maumela has not been criminally charged in connection with the alleged corruption.

His Sandhurst mansion, reportedly featuring 10 bedrooms, a private car wash and a salon, remains at the centre of the legal dispute as the NPA prepares to oppose his application.
