Bafana Bafana Edge Guinea As Mosimane Wins On Return
Pitso Mosimane’s second spell as Bafana Bafana coach began with a 2-1 victory over Guinea in their 2027 AFCON qualifier at Orlando Amstel Arena.
The result gives South Africa an important three points in Group D, where Kenya are already guaranteed a place at the tournament as co-hosts. That leaves one qualifying place available from the group.
Mosimane kept faith with much of the team that represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup. Olwethu Makhanya, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Iqraam Rayners were the notable changes to the starting XI.
Ronwen Williams captained the side from goal, while Makhanya partnered Ime Okon in central defence. Teboho Mokoena and Sphephelo Sithole anchored the midfield. Relebohile Mofokeng, Thapelo Maseko and Oswin Appollis provided the attacking support for Rayners.
Guinea arrived with a dangerous attacking threat in Serhou Guirassy. The Borussia Dortmund striker was identified as one of their biggest weapons before kick-off.
Ime Okon put Bafana ahead in the first half, showing good instinct in taking a shot with his left foot. Cisse, however, drew Guinea level just after halftime.
Samkelo Kabini, who replaced Aubrey Modiba at left-back, secured the win with another well-taken strike in the 77th minute.
The win is particularly important because Bafana next face Eritrea in Cairo on 30 September, before meeting Egypt in a friendly on 4 October.
Mosimane now has three points from his first competitive match back in charge, with the pressure shifting to the trip to Egypt.
