ANC Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) coordinator Sochayile Khanyile has congratulated SASCO and the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) on victories in recent SRC elections at several universities, including Wits, VUT, NWU and UJ.
Khanyile said the victories reflected renewed organisational momentum for SASCO and the continued role of progressive student leadership in advancing the interests of students and transforming higher education.
At the University of Johannesburg, SASCO secured all available seats at the Auckland Park Bunting, Auckland Park Kingsway and Soweto campuses, according to Khanyile.
At Vaal University of Technology, SASCO reclaimed the campus, while at North-West University, the alliance secured nine of the 13 SRC seats.
At Wits, the PYA secured all 13 SRC seats, Khanyile said.
“These outcomes demonstrate a sustained presence and growing organisational confidence on campuses across Gauteng,” he said.
Khanyile also commended activists and candidates who contested SRC elections and secured seats at institutions where SASCO did not attain an outright majority.
“Every seat won reflects students’ confidence in SASCO and provides a platform to advance their interests,” he said.
He called on newly elected SASCO-led SRCs to treat the confidence placed in them by students as a mandate to serve.
Khanyile also encouraged young people to carry the spirit of democratic participation beyond university campuses and into broader society.
As South Africa approaches the local government elections on 4 November 2026, he encouraged young people and all eligible voters to participate in the elections.
“The right to vote is an important expression of citizenship and provides young people with an opportunity to participate in shaping the communities in which they live, work and study,” Khanyile said.
