Netflix officially announced Stars & Vows: Anele & Buzza this week as part of its 10-year celebration of Netflix in South Africa. The wedding docu-soap is scheduled to premiere on the streaming platform later in 2026.

From love story to the small screen

The upcoming series follows Mdoda and Mgudlwa as they navigate their relationship and the journey surrounding their marriage. According to Netflix, viewers can expect to see the couple experience the challenges, joy and anticipation associated with saying “I do.”

The production is being presented as both a documentary soap and wedding special, promising audiences a more intimate look at the couple away from Mdoda’s familiar role as a broadcaster and entertainer.

The series is created by Nomzamo Mbatha, Teddy Geldart, Vuyo Sowah and Pet Tasara, with Pascual Wakefield directing. It is produced by Dopezuluboi Productions.

A royal romance

Reports say that Mdoda and Mgudlwa’s relationship has attracted significant public interest. Mgudlwa is a lawyer and a Xhosa prince. The couple’s wedding celebrations have incorporated Xhosa cultural traditions, adding another layer of interest to their story.

Their marriage was reported in April 2025, when Mdoda tied the knot with Mgudlwa in a traditional Xhosa wedding celebration.

By January 2026, Mdoda had also embraced her new chapter as a wife and shared aspects of her makoti journey with her followers. News24 reported that she had taken the surname Mgudlwa and received a new name from her in-laws.

Netflix continues to showcase South African stories

The announcement forms part of a major slate of South African productions unveiled by Netflix as the streamer celebrates a decade in the country.

Netflix says it has showcased more than 300 South African titles since launching locally in 2016 and has supported more than 8,000 jobs through partnerships with more than 30 local production companies.

For Mdoda and Mgudlwa, their Netflix project represents a new opportunity to share their love story with audiences at home and internationally.

And with the wedding already having captured public attention, viewers will no doubt be curious to discover what happens behind the scenes of Anele and Buzza’s journey from romance to married life.
