A well-known MK Party leader and prominent businessman has been slapped with a blood curdling multi-million rands tax bill.
Africa Daily can exclusively reveal that Gauteng deputy provincial coordinator and businessman Gavin Khungwayo has been ordered to pay more than R134 million in outstanding taxes by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) .
News that Khungwayo is in trouble with the taxman came to fore after SARS obtained a default judgment against him in the Johannesburg High Court last week.
According to the papers , which Africa Daily has seen, Khungwayo first owed SARS R133 million. However, the bill skyrocketed to over R134 500 000 after SARS added more R134 000 in interest and administrative penalties.
Before obtaining a default judgment against Khungwayo, SARS wrote him a final letter of demand on 12 August 2026 to settle the bill.
The demand states that Khungwayo had failed to pay tax debt relating to one or more tax years and/or tax periods.
SARS gave him 10 business days from the date of the demand to pay the full amount or make use of the remedies available to him under the tax administration process.
The revenue service warned that failure to settle the debt could trigger further enforcement measures.
These include SARS approaching a third party who owes Khungwayo money, or holds money on his behalf, and directing that party to pay the tax debt.
SARS also warned that a civil judgment could be enforced through a warrant of execution, allowing the sheriff of the court to attach and sell Khungwayo’s assets to recover the money owed.
The judgment and subsequent demand put the spotlight on the financial affairs of Khungwayo, who holds a senior position in the MK Party’s Gauteng provincial structure while also operating as a businessman.
When approached for comment, Khungwayo said he was shocked to the marrow of his bones about the bill.
“How do I get to owe them such a lot of money? If I owe them such a lot of money, it means I have made at least a billion mos. I don’t know how I got to owe them so much money,” he said.
Khungwayo alleged that the quantum of the final letter of demand differed diametrically from the amount they had initially claimed he owed.
“I was phoned by one of the officials who said I owed them R5 million. She later changed it and said I owe them R30 million, and now they say I owe them more than R134 million. Madoda, where will I get so much money to pay them? Please advise me, my brother,” he asked.
Khungwayo said he would hire a tax consultant to deal with the matter.
“There must be a solution found because even if they say they want to attach my assets, it won’t work because I have no assets in my name. I lost everything and went back home a long time ago. I own nothing, I have nothing,” he claimed.
