BMW Kempton Park security guard Teboho Kabayi has been gifted a BMW after a humiliating encounter with two customers went viral.
Cybersecurity and integrated security company ScaryByte surprised the 27-year-old with the vehicle and a R30 000 cheque on Wednesday.
The company shared photographs of the handover on social media.
Speaking to News24, Kabayi said he was still processing the unexpected gift.
“I was overwhelmed by the happiness,” he said.
The cheque is intended to help with the vehicle’s maintenance and support Kabayi’s plans to open a bakery.
Viral video sparks outrage
Kabayi became widely known after a video showed him carrying out access-control procedures at the Kempton Park dealership.
He asked two men which department they intended to visit and requested a driver’s licence to scan, as required by the dealership.
One of the men responded by mocking Kabayi, repeatedly referring to himself as a millionaire and saying the security guard would never own a BMW.
The passenger filmed the confrontation and later shared it online.
Kabayi remained calm throughout the exchange, prompting widespread praise for his professionalism.
Company restores his dignity
ScaryByte chief financial officer Fatima Moolla said the company was disturbed by the way Kabayi was treated while performing his duties.
“No one has the right to speak to another person that way. The sun shines for everyone,” she said.
Moolla said security officers play an important role and deserve dignity and respect.
She added that a person’s status or the vehicle they drive does not determine their worth.
Public support changes his life
The BMW is the latest show of support for Kabayi.
Motoring community Glen On Cars previously launched a campaign to “restore his dignity” after the video went viral.
The campaign raised R31 900, which was handed to him.
Kabayi said he planned to save the donation to help achieve his dream of opening a bakery.
He also said he had forgiven the men involved despite the humiliation.
The vehicle handover has since attracted fresh praise online, with users celebrating the reversal of the insult directed at Kabayi.
