Four couples, one leap of faith
Currently airing on Mzansi Magic every Sunday at 18:00, the social experiment has introduced viewers to four couples who took the ultimate leap of faith in the hope of finding lasting love. They are Hlulani Ngobeni and Nompumelelo Sobopha, Lesiba Tleane and Matsheliso Maphutse, Obren Masuku and Laurinda Mabunda, and Prince Zwide Zwane and Esethu Seku.
As their journeys unfold, viewers are watching each couple face the highs and lows of building a marriage with someone they had never met before, proving that love can be as unpredictable as it is rewarding.
Matsheliso Maphutse shares her experience
We caught up with Matsheliso, and she gave us the rundown on being married, why viewers should watch, and so much more.
What made you sign up for the show?
I signed up for the show because clearly my love life needs a stakeholder engagement and a new strategic direction, but honestly, I’m at a stage in my life where I’m intentional about love. I’ve built a career, I’m constantly working on myself and I’m no longer interested in relationships that are going nowhere. The idea of trusting the process, being vulnerable and stepping outside of my comfort zone is both terrifying and exciting. If I’m going to find my person, it might as well be in the most dramatic way possible.
What was it about the experiment that made you think, “I could do this”?
I think because I was ready to stop wondering “what if” and start being intentional about finding a lasting connection. I’ve never been afraid of taking a leap of faith.
What was your first impression when you saw your husband at the altar?
My first impression was, “Okay, he’s actually not bad.” He wasn’t exactly Prince Charming riding down the beach on a horse with his hair swaying dramatically in the wind, but there was something about him that immediately put me at ease. In a moment that could have been overwhelming, finally seeing him somehow made me relax. The nerves started to disappear and instead of focusing on whether he was everything I imagined, I found myself wondering who he really was.

What was going through your mind as you walked down the aisle?
What was I thinking? Don’t trip on your dress! Then it immediately escalated to imagining myself falling and the dress somehow flying up from the back. I wasn’t thinking about romance, vows or finding my soulmate. I was in full survival mode. Amidst everything that was happening, my brain decided that public embarrassment was the biggest threat, but once I got closer and saw him standing there, the panic started to settle and that’s when it finally hit me that this is actually happening.
How did you prepare yourself mentally before filming began?
I just reminded myself to stay open-minded and trust the process. I knew I couldn’t control who I’d be matched with, so I focused on showing up as my authentic self and giving the experiment a real chance.
Why do you think viewers should follow your journey this season?
People should watch because I’m relatable. I’m ambitious, but I’m also still figuring out what I truly want, as that changes every now and then. I’m confident, but I still have moments of vulnerability. I love hard, I tend to overthink sometimes, I laugh loudly, and I genuinely believe love should be both intentional and fun!
Also, I’m not afraid to voice my opinions. If you’re looking for someone who’s real, unapologetically herself and genuinely giving this experiment a real shot, then you’ll definitely want to watch my journey. Whether I find my husband or collect life lessons along the way, one thing is for certain: I’m going to show up authentically, every time.
Have people started recognising you in public? What’s that been like?
Yes, I have been recognised a few times and honestly, I find it more funny than anything else because I’m not used to it. Every time it happens, there’s a brief moment where I’m looking around wondering who they’re talking to before realising it’s actually me. It’s still very surreal, but luckily everyone has been really sweet and respectful so far.
How has the experiment helped you grow in your personal life?
The experiment has helped me grow by teaching me to let go of control a little. I’m used to having a plan for everything, and this experience forced me to trust the process, be present and embrace the unknown.
