Financial red flags in romantic relationships

Money can strengthen a relationship, but it can also become a major source of conflict when financial habits and values don’t align. While every couple approaches finances differently, recognising financial red flags early can help prevent stress, debt and broken trust.

Secretive spending

One of the biggest warning signs is financial secrecy. According to Psychology Today, keeping money-related secrets in relationships is the number-one financial deal breaker.

If your partner hides purchases, has undisclosed debt or avoids discussing their finances, it may indicate deeper trust issues. Open conversations about income, expenses and financial goals are essential for building a healthy relationship.

Living beyond their means

Consistently spending more than they earn can lead to long-term financial instability. Whether it’s relying heavily on credit cards, taking out unnecessary loans or chasing an extravagant lifestyle, overspending can place significant pressure on both partners if the relationship becomes more serious.

Financial control

Healthy relationships involve mutual respect, including when it comes to money. According to Verywell Mind, financial abuse may involve trying to control your use of or access to money you have earned or saved.

If one partner insists on controlling all financial decisions, restricts access to shared funds or uses money to manipulate the other person, this may be a sign of financial abuse. Financial independence and transparency are important in any partnership.

Different financial priorities

It’s normal to have different spending habits, but major differences in financial values can create conflict. One person may prioritise saving for a home, while the other prefers spending on luxury items or frequent travel. Honest discussions about long-term goals can help determine whether your financial futures are compatible.

Refusing to plan for the future

A partner who avoids budgeting, saving or planning for emergencies may not be prepared for life’s unexpected challenges. Shared financial planning doesn’t require identical incomes, but it does require a willingness to work towards common goals.

Recognising these financial red flags doesn’t necessarily mean the relationship is doomed. Instead, they provide an opportunity for honest conversations, healthier financial habits and informed decisions about your future together.
